Mark Gabriel

Theatre for the Fierce
 On View
January 30, 2026 - February 4, 2026

OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION

Thursday, January 29

5 - 8pm

As with Mark Gabriel’s previous body of work, Theatre for the Fierce continues the themes of re-contextualizing iconic images from history and culture for dramatic and subversive effect. This new series explores inner motion, unapologetically. Theatre here is not only a stage or arena, but also an inner frontier: the geography of the heart and the mind. Treating the canvas as a site of performance, these figures emerge unmasked, embodying defiance, and vulnerability. Their fierceness speaks not to aggression, but to courage—the courage to stand exposed, take up space, and exist loudly. To live fiercely, when the curtain never truly falls.

** This show opens just one day before The Open Studio Tour Weekend.  Make a weekend of it and come visit Todos Santos.  Visit The Palapa Society for more about the Open Studio Tour.

Where land surrenders to the sea, the Sirens command the waves and famously call wayward sailors to their icy, watery deaths. They are creatures part human and part animal who occupy our dreams. They are powerful and beautiful and their song will hypnotize and lure you in.

“The image of perfectly good humans jumping into the void occupies my dreams. It fascinates and terrifies in equal measure. In dramatic fashion, these women are letting go of a perfectly safe reality in favor of the unknown. It's quite possible they will discover their own divinity.”

The fragrance emitted by thousands of flowers absorbed into the pores of the soil, and only released when displaced by rain. Scientists, Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas coined the term "Petrichor".

These two scientists find themselves at odds with the nature that they so bravely study. Here they are immortalized in a desert rain, as out of place as can be, surrounded by the dangers and wonders of life.

Driven by a waxing moon and drawn by instinct rather than gravity, the Dune Rider traverses the theatre of threshold, where the desert meets the sea. There is no saddle, no armor — only trust, balance, and a faithful companion. Her fierceness lives in certainty guided by intuition through darkness. She does not dominate the landscape — she moves with it.

Choosing presence over fear, beauty over panic. Oblivion hums in the distance under threat of destructive power to remain unshaken, to sing one’s own song while the world rattles its weapons.
