O Re o Libertà (Detail), 48" x 60" , Acrylic, mixed media, ink on panel, Mark Gabriel
Hideous Glorious performs as a critique on moral authority. To unmask; what pretends to be neutral, moral, but actually driven by hidden interests.

The title “Hideous Glorious” captures the paradox: the truth about who we are is both beautiful (glorious) and ugly (hideous) — and crucially, it stays hidden, no matter how much art tries to expose it.

Is there such a thing as a “true self,” or are we always performing?

Unmasking becomes less about truth and more about awareness. It asks us to recognize the artifice we participate in, the images we create, and the narratives we inhabit.

Even the most “honest” self-portrait is never purely truth—it is constructed. The pose is chosen. The costume is deliberate. The symbols are selected. What appears intimate and revealing is, in fact, carefully composed.
When we accept the image as truth—we risk believing in something authored rather than real. The “monster” is not deception alone, but the ease with which we accept performance as authenticity.
