Tropic of Leisure

THE RETRO TROPICAL JETSET SERIES V

On View
November 28, 2024 - January 30, 2025

For this new Series V of the Retro Tropical Jetset, Mark Gabriel has exchanged the civil confines of his characters homes and secure gardens and placed them in the Baja Wilderness.

In the heady days of the 1960s, a remarkable shift took place. The glamorous jet set socialites, those icons of high society, traditionally confined to the opulent palaces of the city, began to yearn for something more. And so, they ventured out — not to the usual haunts of the elite, but to the wild, untamed deserts. With an air of defiance, they traded pearls and diamonds for wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, seeking unbridled revelry in the arid wilderness.

In this stark landscape, they shed their civilised airs, indulging in carefree abandon under the scorching sun, their laughter echoing across the barren dunes. It was a curious juxtaposition: the cultivated, refined elite immersed in the raw beauty of nature’s most unforgiving terrain, searching not for solace, but for adventure, freedom, and a taste of the unknown. Their journey, fueled by a thirst for excess and the spirit of rebellion, marked an era where even the most refined could find themselves swept away by the intoxicating call of the wild desert.
